I often hear new Disciples in Christ say that they are not yet equipped to start making disciples on their own. The most common impediment, according to them, is a lack of knowledge. And so, just one question for today:
What does a disciple of Jesus need to know in order to make disciples?
We invite you to check out our
Making Disciples Facebook Page.

We have to know what GOD has done for US:
1) God exists (Jn 1:1-2)
2) God created everything (Jn 1:3)
3) God sets the rules (Isaiah 45:18-23)
2) people are sinners (Romans 3:23)
3) sin deserves death (Romans 6:23)
4) God sent Jesus to suffer and die for our sins, so we dont have to (1 John 4:10)
5) we have to change and turn to God and have lives that reflect evidence of that salvation (Acts 26:20).
I guess it wouldhelp if I had numbered them correctly. But basically, we need to know God and know we are sinners and that God sent His Son to suffer and die for our sins.
When I read Matthew 28, the Word says teach…when I read Acts 1:8 the word says witness. I cannot lead anyone to Jesus…that is the work of the Holy Spirit…just like making disciiples. It is all about empowerment and I’m not empowered to empower. Jesus wants us to tell… He will do the rest according to His good pleasure.
Now, if I am going to witness…that’s easy…I just tell what I know. If I am going to teach then I need method and content. That is the real issue.
Jon, if you have Christ in you, you’re empowered to empower others. A huge part of discipleship is empowering each other to go and make disciples. You miss this you miss the “Great Commission”. The method begins wherever two have gathered with Christ at the center. It continues as we continue forward in developin character that keeps Christ at the center. That’s where discipleship begins and ends.
As my dad often said: “One step ahead, you’re a leader. Two steps ahead, you’re a martyr.” What we see is that one step ahead, in the framework of a functional multi-generational (both spiritual as well as chronological) and multi-gifted Body of Christ, is sufficient. Why do we make it so complicated? Let life reproduce life.
Know where you’re going; know how to get there; and know how to take others with you.
Isn’t the answer “Jesus”?
I mean, the demon-possessed guy got delivered and Jesus sent him right back to tell others. The woman at the well had a 5 minute encounter and took it back to her whole town. The Ethiopian eunuch in Acts was baptized and abandoned by a disappearing disciple.
So, I think the (over-simplistic) answer is Jesus.
