Creating “Reverse Discipleship” Opportunities?

Just finished reading this article about Reverse Mentoring.

The article immediately set my spiritual synapses blazing with the possible applications for discipleship.  ”Reverse Discipleship,” using a sort of reverse psychology.

Let me explain.  What if the older, wiser, more seasoned believers among us took time to learn something from unbelievers?  The older saints could ask younger “sinners”to teach them to use email or facebook or how to do any number of things computer related.  Those with many years in Christ could ask those with little time in Christ to teach them a trade, a language, or a special skill which they do not have.  In doing so, the older or more tenured existing disciples could spend quality time with the younger or less experienced non-disciples and create an environment of discipleship.  I know there is nothing new under the sun, and I may just be having a dumb moment here, but if being missional includes becoming part of people’s everyday lives so that we can show them Jesus, then why not?  A few Questions:

Have you ever tried something like this?  What’s your experience?

Do you think it’s a good idea?  Why or Why not?

What kinds of things would you who are seasoned in the Spirit like to learn from those who are not?

Miguel: A few things came to mind, and I blogged about them at briefly at http://tellingsecrets-mks.blogspot.com/2011/12/tearing-up-one-way-streets.html. I do think there’s a lot more we could do, especially when first starting a ministry, to learn from the people we want to serve. Language learning (when needed) is a perfect case in point, but there may be plenty of other ways we could let potential disciples disciple us by inviting us into their world and helping us learn our way around. I’ve become convinced that everybody has something to teach, as everyone has a story to tell.
